What's Up

Yes, we've been silent in the blogosphere for the last two months. Why, you ask? Well, we've been working behind the scenes: planning, writing, designing, reading.

We finally began our Writers in the Schools (WITS) program at the beginning of February. We're working with English teacher Shannon Draper-Gard at Lawrence High School, going into two of her classes in ones, twos, or threes to help with her students' poetry unit. For this project, we curated a show in the teachers' gallery at the Spencer Museum of Art with teachers from LHS. Check it out. Up now through Feb. 28. We chose the art, and we chose the literature to go alongside it. We're SUPER excited about working with Shannon and the kids, and we're hoping to put together a publication of the students' poems inspired by the art in the show, as well as hosting a public reading for them. It's so exciting to finally get this moving and work with Lawrence students to promote writing. Stay tuned.

Several of our members have recently had their work accepted in journals, such as Coal City Review and Sentence. How awesome is that?!

We have t-shirts, too! We'll get pictures up soon so that you can drool over them and, yes, purchase them. They will be available at all of our events and at AWP.

Coming up in March, we're doing another exchange with UMKC. They will be here in Lawrence on Friday, March 12 (location TBA), and we'll be reading at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Library on Friday, March 26. We'll let you know who's reading soon.

Also, an event is in the works! Keep your schedules open for the beginning of April because something big's going to happen. Yep, it'll blow your minds.
